Jenny Matthews RSW

I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1986 with BA(Hons) in Drawing and Painting. Since then, I have been a professional artist exhibiting in galleries around the UK and abroad. I paint almost exclusively in watercolour, most usually of flowers, plants and cityscapes. Most of my time is spent in the studio or plein air painting, and I also run my own watercolour classes in Edinburgh and teach occasional watercolour workshops further afield.

In 2007 and 2015 I won awards at the annual open competition at the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS), London and in 2016 and 2022 I was nominated for the biennial watercolour prize ‘Marche d’Acqua’, Fabriano, Italy. I was the recipient of the IFA Centre-Paisley Award at the Paisley Art Institute annual open exhibition in 2026.

Since 2016 I’ve been the leader of the group of artists representing Scotland, amongst 90 other participating countries, at the annual watercolour convention in Italy ‘FabrianoinAcquarello’.

I live at the western extremity of Edinburgh where I also have my studio. My hobbies include swimming, cycling, walking, running, gardening and learning languages (I speak French and Italian).
