Artists Statement

My work is inspired by foreign travel. I express my subconscious thoughts and feelings using various materials. I paint using water based media; I draw with pastels, pencil and inks. I print etchings and use all sorts of materials to make three dimensional works.
My subject is usually a solitary figure. There are written words and images on his or her body, which take the form of tattoos. I would say my work is autobiographical. Whilst I try to convey what the picture is about, it is also important for me to hide part of what I am trying to say.

I began my art education in 1959 at Glasgow School of Art.
I have had 14 solo exhibitions to date and have exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy since 1984 and at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts since 1989.
My recent Retrospective touring exhibition ‘June Carey, a Traveller’s Dreams’ prompted me to write a book about my work ‘The Art of June Carey – Seeing Through the Dreams’
In 2013 I was invited to paint a mural for the Smiths Art Gallery & Museum in Stirling. The mural ‘A Heavenly Gift’ hangs permanently above the entrance to the main Gallery.
