Artists Statement

I have already known how fortunate I was to live and work in Arbroath through school and college years. It was a rich environment, a sea town with harbours and related architecture, with imagery of trawler and fisherman and with a constant awareness for the sea. It provided romantic subject matter and invited painters to observe, to translate, to transform and to find the elusive pleasure of picture making.

Biography

1948 - 1953 - From Arbroath High School and Dundee Art College successive scholarship and lectureships before becoming Principal Lecturer, Head of Art & Design at Didsbury College of Education, Manchester Polytechnic 1956 - 1979. I also spent an academic year as a Visiting Professor at State University College, Buffalo, New York State, 1972 - 1973. I left full-time teaching at Manchester Polytechnic in 1979 but continued to teach summer schools in Alston, Hull, Lancashire and Harrogate. I have never moved far from Scottish painting and in 2002 have returned to live in Arbroath. The sea coast and the land around my home continues to give me great pleasure.
