Busby, John NDD RSA

Elected to RSW 1982

Over the years the two strands of my art - landscape and wildlife - developed in parallel. The landscapes; mostly larger oils searching for depths of meaning in the forms of hills, clouds, weather, patterns in rocks and sea-pools, often abstract; and the wildlife, mainly birds; a continuing response of enjoyment with the knowledge gained from many hours of watching.

I was born in Bradford in 1928.
After National Service in the RAF I studied at Leeds College of Art (NDD), then at Edinburgh College of Art. (DA.Edin)
I was awarded a Post-Graduate & Major Travel Scholarship (France & Italy), and on return joined the ECA Painting School staff under Sir William Gillies and taught there from 1956 to 1988, 'retiring' into full time art since then. I have illustrated about 35 books. My book "Drawing Birds" for the RSPB was revised for a new edition in 2004. A more comprehensive book of my paintings & drawings called 'Land Marks & Sea Wings' was published in 2005.
I have been fortunate to visit many fascinating places in the world to draw the wildlife, including Aldabra Atol in the Indian Ocean, New Zealand, the Falklands and Galapagos Islands.
My local patch is East Lothian with its varied shoreline and sea-bird islands, farmlands, woods and Lammermuirs
