Jim Dunbar
For the past four years I have been working on a stretch of coastline between Westhaven and Easthaven, a short distance from home.
Recently, an old clinkerbuilt boat was broken up on the rocks of Westhaven during a storm. I came across the wreck and made a few pencil studies and watercolour of it on site. I subsequently found the transom and set it up as a still-life in the studio. It has been the focus of a large oil painting where the previous studies have been extensively used.
Currently, I am working on another composition in watercolour. I am using the same transom this time in reverse and the rocks where the boat met its end. Meantime, more ideas are developing using some other pieces of hull I have rescued.
