Each year at the annual Exhibition the RSW offers encouragement to artists of all ages, both young and established, with its list of generous financial awards. These awards reflect a commitment by the Society to promote and encourage member and non-member artists working in waterbased media
RSW Alexander Graham Munro Travel Award £3000Launched in 1991, this is awarded to an artist under 30 years of age, and is presented in memory of Alexander Graham Munro RSW, the Edinburgh artist best known for his landscapes and outdoor scenes, who travelled extensively throughout France, Western Europe and North Africa. |
RSW Sir William Gillies Award £500This is presented in memory of one of the founder members of the 1922 Group which included artists such as William MacTaggart RSW and George Aright Hall. He visited Paris and studied with Andrew Lhote, before travelling to Florence. He painted still lifes, interiors, and landscapes, in particular the villages of Midlothian and the fishing villages on the east coast. He was Head of Painting and Principal of Edinburgh College of Art. |
RSW Council Award £2500This is presented to the most outstanding work at the Exhibition. |
RSW May Marshall Brown Award £500This award is named after May Marshall Brown RSW. She was an accomplished painter in oil, but mainly watercolour and etched landscapes and architectural subjects. She also enjoyed drawing fishing villages and boats, and travelled and worked in France, Holland and Ireland. |
RSW John Gray Award £500 |
Turcan Connell Prize: |
| In memory of the artist John Gray RSW, whose early works were of fishing boats, harbours and east coast bays. These were painted in a 'direct style' on rough paper, to 'evoke the windswept atmosphere of the east coast'. He is best known, however, as a flower painter. | £250 |
